P0030 to P0037: oxygen sensor heater circuit faults explained
A heater code is not a mixture code. It means the sensor cannot get to working temperature fast enough, and the consequences show up during warm-up.
Every oxygen sensor has a heater inside it. The sensor only produces a usable signal above roughly 300 °C, and waiting for exhaust gas to get it there takes minutes — minutes during which the engine runs on a preset fuelling map and the catalyst does very little.
The heater exists to shorten that window from minutes to seconds. When the ECU cannot verify that it works, you get one of these codes.

Reading the code number
The P003x range covers heater control circuits, numbered by bank and sensor position:

Within each group, the first number is a general circuit fault, the second is low, and the third is high.
Sensor 1 is before the catalyst, sensor 2 after it. That distinction matters for what the fault costs you.
What actually fails
The heater element itself
Most common by a wide margin. The element is a resistive heater inside the sensor body, and it fails open with age and thermal cycling. Once open, the sensor is replaced — the heater is not a serviceable part.
Measure resistance across the heater pins and compare with specification. Typical values sit in the single-digit to low-double-digit ohms range; an open circuit reads infinite.
Supply, ground or fuse
The heater draws real current, and many vehicles feed several heaters from one fuse. A blown fuse produces heater codes on multiple sensors at once — if you have P0030 and P0050 together, check the fuse before buying two sensors.

The control side
The ECU usually switches the heater ground. A driver failure inside the module is rare but real, and it is what remains after the sensor and the wiring check out.

These connectors live under the car in the path of road salt. Corrosion adds resistance, and added resistance in a heater circuit reads as a fault long before it reads as a failure.

Why an upstream heater fault matters more
Sensor 1 is what the fuelling loop uses. If it warms slowly, the engine stays in open loop longer, which means:
- Richer running during warm-up, so worse fuel consumption on short trips.
- More unburnt fuel reaching a cold catalyst.
- Readiness monitors that take longer to complete, or never do.

A downstream heater fault mostly affects the catalyst monitor rather than how the engine runs. It still needs fixing, but the urgency is different.
Live data that identifies it
Log oxygen sensor voltage from a cold start and watch how long the upstream sensor takes to begin switching.

Watching that transition is more informative than any resistance measurement, because it tests the whole chain under real conditions.

What not to conclude
A heater code is not evidence of a mixture problem, a failing catalyst or a vacuum leak. If P0030 arrives alongside P0171, they are two separate investigations that happen to share a sensor.
The reverse trap is also common: replacing an oxygen sensor because of a heater code, when the fuse feeding it was blown. The new sensor sets the same code within a drive cycle.
Before you buy a sensor
- Check the fuse feeding the heater circuit.
- Check for the same code on other sensors — a pattern means a shared cause.
- Measure heater resistance at the sensor connector.
- Inspect the connector for oil, water and corrosion.
- Log cold-start switching time to confirm the diagnosis.
