Fuel Consumption Went Up: 12 Causes and How to Diagnose via OBD-II
Sudden fuel-use increase: which DTC codes and live parameters to watch, how to distinguish worn engine from a clogged filter.
Fuel use suddenly rose by 2–4 litres per 100 km — that is the ECU’s direct signal that something is off. In most cases the cause is not the engine itself but the sensors or an auxiliary component. Via OBD-II you can find the culprit in 15–30 minutes.
Why fuel use rises at all — the theory
The ECU maintains the air/fuel ratio (AFR) near 14.7:1 for petrol (stoichiometric). It does so using sensor data: MAF (mass air flow), MAP (intake pressure), O₂ (lambda), IAT (intake air temperature), ECT (engine coolant temperature).
If any of them gives a wrong signal, the ECU leans or richens the mixture → fuel use shifts.
12 causes by frequency
1. Dirty MAF sensor — 25% of cases
The mass air flow sensor sits after the air filter. Dust and oil on the platinum wire distort readings — typically toward “under-reporting” so the ECU adds more fuel. Consumption +15–25%.
Check: in Car Diagnostics read PID 0x10 (MAF) in live monitor. Normal at idle: 3–5 g/s, at 2500 rpm — 15–25 g/s. If under-reads — MAF cleaner ($5).
2. Worn lambda sensor — 20%
The oxygen sensor after 100,000 km gets slow and imprecise. The ECU uses its data for mixture correction. A worn O₂ → poor correction → excess fuel.
Check: in Car Diagnostics — Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT). Normal ±5%. Values +15% or higher — mixture is being force-enriched.
3. Overdue air filter — 12%
A clogged filter adds resistance, MAF sees less air → ECU meters less fuel → power drops → driver presses harder → cycle of consumption.
Replacement: $10–20, 5 minutes.
4. Worn spark plugs — 10%
Weak spark → incomplete combustion → part of the fuel goes out the exhaust. Often with P0300–P0308 (misfires).
5. EGR/DPF issue (diesel) — 8%
On diesels, clogged EGR or DPF forces the ECU into active regen mode → extra fuel injection to heat the exhaust.
6. Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor — 6%
Bad ECT gives high reading when cold → ECU skips “cold” mixture → engine misfires cold + overuse.
Check: PID 0x05 in Car Diagnostics. When cold (below 30 °C) — should read ~20 °C. If stably 80 °C — sensor dead.
7. Thermostat stuck open — 5%
Engine never reaches operating temp, ECU in warm-up mode. Consumption +10–15%. Symptoms: cold cabin heater, temp gauge at 60 °C instead of 90.
8. Fuel rail pressure issue — 5%
Too-high pressure (regulator valve) → injectors deliver more. Car Diagnostics — PID 0x23 (Fuel Rail Pressure).
9. Worn injectors — 4%
Coked or worn nozzles → uneven spray → poor combustion → overuse. Fix: cleaning ($50) or replacement ($100 each).
10. Vacuum leak — 3%
Cracked booster hose or PCV valve → extra air ingress → ECU compensates with enrichment.
11. Worn catalyst — 1%
Clogged catalyst adds backpressure → engine “breathes” worse → overuse. Often with P0420.
12. Driving style / winter tyres — not a fault
Sometimes not the car. Winter, winter tyres with +10% rolling resistance, short cold trips without warm-up, air conditioning left on — all give a real +2–3 L/100 km with no technical fault.
Quick diagnostic plan (15 minutes)
- Read DTCs — 30 seconds. Misfires (P0300+), lambda (P0130–P0141), mixture (P0171/P0172) — all direct indicators.
- Live monitor:
- Short / Long Term Fuel Trim — should sit near 0 (±5%)
- MAF at 2500 rpm — 15–25 g/s
- ECT temperature — 80–95 °C in motion
- Visual inspection:
- Air filter condition
- Spark plugs (pull one to gauge)
- Vacuum leaks (hoses)

Complaint: Toyota Corolla 2015, consumption went from 6.5 L/100 to 9.2 L/100.
