Electric window not working: motor, mechanism, or module
A window that moves slowly or stops warns long before it fails. How to separate the motor, the cable mechanism, and the electronics.
An electric window warns you in advance, which is why its failure is almost always predictable in hindsight.
The signs that come first
The glass moves more slowly on one side than the other.
It stops halfway and continues after a second press.
Creaking or crunching inside the door.
The glass rises crooked — one edge leading the other.
Each of these means mechanics needing maintenance, not replacement. Lubricating the runners and rollers at this stage costs a fraction of a new regulator.
Nothing happens at all
Your ears separate electrical from mechanical.
The motor hums, the glass stays put — the cable regulator. The cable has jumped off, snapped, or the drum has broken up. The most common failure on cable regulators.
Silence on pressing — electrical: switch, wiring, fuse, or motor.
It works from the driver’s panel but not its own switch — the door switch is at fault.
It works from its own but not the driver’s — the child lock or the door control module.
The wiring in the door loom
A classic worth knowing: the harness passes from body to door through a rubber boot, and that is exactly where wires break from constant flexing.
The sign: everything in that door works intermittently depending on door position. Often the speaker, the lock, and the mirror fail alongside the window — which points at the loom rather than at individual components.
One-touch operation and relearning
On cars with an automatic mode (“press and the glass runs to the end”) the module remembers the end positions.
After a battery disconnect, motor replacement, or glass replacement that memory is lost. The symptom: no automatic travel, stopping partway, or dropping back down when closing.
That is not a fault. A relearn is needed: usually hold the switch up for a few seconds after full closing, then the same down. The procedure varies by model.
Practical tip: if the symptom appeared after battery work — relearn first, investigate second.
Anti-trap protection
A window that stops and reverses “by itself” is often not faulty: the anti-trap protection is working.
The cause is usually mechanical — dirty or dried-out runners create resistance, and the module interprets it as an obstruction.
The fix: clean and lubricate the seals and runners. That also extends the motor’s life.
What diagnostics shows
Door module codes — per window: open circuit, overload, position error.
Switch states in live data — press each in turn and see which does not respond.
Voltage — during a sag the window moves slowly, which looks like a worn motor; covered in the parasitic drain article.
