Aftermarket intakes: what is promised and what actually happens
A louder noise is perceived as more power. Why an intake achieves almost nothing on a standard engine and what it risks.
Replacing the factory intake with a “cold air” system is one of the most popular first steps in modification. It produces a louder noise, and it is usually the noise that gets mistaken for extra power.
Why there is almost no gain
The factory intake is already sized for the engine’s needs with margin. The restriction on a standard engine is usually elsewhere: cam timing, the head, the exhaust, and the calibration.
What changes on replacement: restriction drops slightly and the noise gets louder.
What does not change: everything else in the chain.
The result: a gain within measurement error on a standard engine. The feeling of a gain is real — but that is psychoacoustics, not torque.
The main risk: hot air
The factory intake draws air from outside the engine bay — through the scuttle or beside a wing. That is deliberate.
An open filter in the engine bay draws hot air. Hot air is less dense, so it carries less oxygen.
The consequence: stationary and in traffic the engine gets air far hotter than ambient — and loses power instead of gaining it.
What the data shows: intake air temperature. That is the simplest way to test the idea on a specific car — compare readings before and after in identical conditions.
The second risk: the airflow sensor
Oiled performance filters leave a film on the sensor. It begins under-reading, the module injects less fuel, and a lean mixture with code P0171 appears; covered in the air filter article.
Worse filtration — more abrasive in the bores.
Changed geometry ahead of the sensor — the flow becomes turbulent and the sensor lies even when clean. That is the most underrated part: the sensor was calibrated for the factory duct.
What genuinely works
A clean factory filter — the baseline; covered in its own article.
Coordinated intake and exhaust work with recalibration — a different category of work and budget.
Removing real restrictions: a blocked catalyst, a boost leak, a dirty throttle body — those produce noticeable results because they restore what was lost; covered in the hesitation article.
The rule: first give the engine back what it lost, then think about gains.
What to check if an intake is already fitted
- Intake air temperature in traffic and on the move.
- Fuel trims — an offset points at the sensor.
- Lean mixture codes.
- Where the filter breathes from — look physically.
- Airflow sensor condition — after oiled filters.
