Auto Start-Stop not working: 8 reasons the system won't kill the engine at traffic lights

Auto Start-Stop (Idle Stop-Go, ISG, BSG) — the system that shuts the engine off at a traffic light and automatically restarts when you lift off the brake. In 2026 it’s standard on 90% of new EU cars. But “suddenly stopped working” is a common complaint after 2-4 years of use. Below: 8 causes and how to diagnose via OBD-II.
How Auto Start-Stop works
At a stop the ECU checks 10-15 conditions (depends on the manufacturer). If all pass — it shuts the engine off. When you lift off the brake — a beefed-up starter-generator (ISG) or BSG (Belt Starter-Generator) restarts it.
Typical conditions to allow stop:
- Engine warm (> 150°F coolant)
- Battery charged (> 75-80%)
- A/C not at peak load
- Driver seatbelt fastened
- Doors closed
- Steering wheel centred
- Grade < 5%
- Speed = 0 for the last 2+ sec
- ECU intake temp, EGT, DPF regen not active
If even one condition fails — Auto Stop doesn’t trigger. And that’s not a fault — it’s normal behaviour.
8 reasons Auto Start-Stop doesn’t work
1. Battery aging (most often, 50-60% of cases)
- EFB / AGM start-stop batteries last 3-5 years. Capacity drops, ECU stops trusting
- Symptoms: worked and suddenly stopped. SS indicator lit yellow
- OBD: Battery voltage 12.4V after overnight sit vs 12.6V spec
- Fix: replace with EFB / AGM ($150-300). Don’t use plain lead-acid — it’ll fry the alternator.
2. Engine not warm enough
- Cause: short winter trips — engine hasn’t reached 65°C
- Fix: after 10-15 min the system works. Or replace thermostat if it’s persistent.
3. Climate at peak
- Cause: A/C max on a hot day → compressor needs alternator power, ECU won’t kill
- Fix: none. Correct behaviour.
4. Seatbelt not fastened
- Driver unbelted → ECU won’t kill
- Fix: buckle up
5. Passenger seat occupancy sensor
- On some cars (Mercedes) — if passenger not belted → ISS deactivates
- Fix: buckle passenger or remove weight from seat
6. Road grade
- ECU via accelerometer sees grade > 5° → won’t kill (fear of rolling)
- Fix: correct behaviour
7. DPF regeneration active
- On diesel: if DPF regen is running — ISS disabled to not interrupt
- Fix: after regen completes (5-15 min) it comes back
8. Actual ISS/BSG fault

DTC codes:
- P0AEE, P0AEF — Battery voltage sensor
- P169A — Auxiliary battery voltage
- P16A6 — Starter cranking time exceeded
- U0111 — Lost communication with BCM battery module

Fix: depends on the code. Often — replace the battery voltage sensor (IBS — Intelligent Battery Sensor, $50-150).
Diagnostics in 10 min
Step 1. Read DTCs
If there are codes — see table above. None — go to step 2.
Step 2. Read live parameters
- Battery voltage — should be > 12.6V engine off, > 13.8V engine on
- Battery SoC (State of Charge, manufacturer PID) — should be > 75%
- Engine coolant — > 65°C for active work
Step 3. Read the “Start-Stop Ready” PID
On VW/Audi (VAG Group) there’s a specific PID Start-Stop Availability — shows real-time whether the system is ready.
If Not Ready — it outputs the cause:

Very handy — no guessing, direct answer from the ECU.
Prevention and life
- Battery replacement with genuine EFB/AGM — per schedule (3-5 years)
- Don’t use lead-acid instead of AGM — starter load at 20+ cranks/day kills a normal battery in 6 months
- Once a month — long drive (30+ min) for full battery charge
- Don’t “delete” ISS physically — it degrades EGT/DPF (engine was designed around ISS)
