AdBlue (Diesel Exhaust Fluid, DEF) — a 32.5% urea-water solution injected into the diesel exhaust to convert NOx into nitrogen and water via an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst. Mandatory on every Euro 6 diesel (since 2014). And also — the source of the most expensive “engine shutdown” after 5 start-ups if the tank runs empty. What SCR includes
- AdBlue tank — 12-20 L on a passenger car, 25+ L on commercial
- AdBlue pump — holds 5-9 bar for injection
- AdBlue injector — delivers a precisely calculated dose upstream of the SCR
- SCR catalyst — where NOx + NH3 → N2 + H2O reaction happens
- NOx sensors — upstream and downstream, measure efficiency
- SCR temperature sensor — reaction needs 250-400°C
All controlled by a separate DCU (DEF Control Unit) that talks to the ECU over CAN.

Why a Euro 6 diesel “locks out”
Euro 6 requires no driving without a working SCR. So manufacturers programmed:
- Warning 1 — AdBlue level dropped to 1500 mi remaining. CEL + info message.
- Warning 2 — 600 mi remaining. Beep on start.
- Power reduction — 120 mi remaining. Speed limited to 35-50 mph.
- Start lockout — 0 mi or P2BAD. Engine can be started 5 more times, then a mobile technician is needed with genuine AdBlue and adaptation reset. EU price: €300-800.
Symptoms of SCR problems
- Grey/yellow smoke on warm-up — insufficient AdBlue injection
- Smells like “ammonia” under the car — AdBlue leak near tank or injector
- Crystallization on hoses — AdBlue frozen (crystallizes below -11°C) or drying on a damaged line
- CEL flashing — SCR critical fault
How to diagnose AdBlue via OBD-II
Standard OBD-II Mode 03 shows major DTCs. For detail you need Mode 22 UDS:
- NOx sensor upstream / downstream — NOx concentration before and after the catalyst (efficiency = 1 - after/before)
- AdBlue tank level — exact litres remaining
- AdBlue temperature — critical in winter (below -11°C AdBlue can’t inject)
- SCR catalyst temperature — should hit 250-400°C when driving
- Days until stop — how many days until lockout (when a warning is active)

Prevention and tips
- Use genuine AdBlue (ISO 22241 certification). Cheap knock-offs → frequent P204F.
- Never mix with diesel — separate cap. One mix-up → P207F + expensive repair.
- In winter — make sure the AdBlue tank heater works (separate element controlled by ECU).
- Scan regularly — AdBlue level and NOx efficiency. If efficiency drops below 80% — SCR catalyst is aging.
- Don’t buy an “AdBlue emulator” — P2BAD triggers on strict read-only control, plus it violates Euro 6.
