Tortoise — Reduced Power
The red tortoise icon on Tesla is the Reduced Power indicator. The car caps drive power to protect the battery or drivetrain from overheat or damage.
What this indicator means
Tesla implements "tortoise mode" as a defensive strategy: if the BMS (Battery Management System) detects an anomaly — low charge, battery overheat, inverter fault, or drivetrain overheat after track sessions — power is limited to 60–80 kW instead of the normal 200–450 kW.
Common causes
- Battery severely discharged (below 5% SoC)
- Battery overheat after several Supercharges in a row
- Battery too cold (below -10 °C — regen and drive limited)
- Motor overheat (Track mode, Drag Strip)
- Inverter or BMS fault
- Stuck "high voltage" contactor fault after firmware update
What to do as a driver
Let the car rest 10–30 min in a normal-temperature area — the mode often clears. Charge if SoC is low. If the icon persists after an hour of idle time, visit Tesla service. Tesla Toolbox (service data) shows real-time battery temperature.
Safety
Important: the car still drives but only in economy mode. In severe scenarios (BMS fault) continued driving may be unsafe.
