Tesla parking brake — fault

The red PARK-with-exclamation icon on Tesla is an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) fault. The car may not move or refuse to shift between Park/Drive.

What this indicator means

Tesla uses EPB on the rear wheels — small motors clamp the pads instead of a cable. The EPB module reads BMS 12V, hydraulic block and Autopilot HW. Lose comms with any of them and the system locks in safe mode (Park).

Common causes

  • 12V AGM battery discharge (most common)
  • Fault after Autopilot firmware update
  • Broken wire to the EPB motor (rear wheel)
  • CAN-bus issue between Autopilot HW and EPB
  • Pad mechanically frozen on the rotor (winter)

What to do as a driver

Check 12V voltage (below 11.5 V — replace the battery). Try rebooting (hold both scroll wheels 10 seconds). If it does not clear — Tesla Service. Temporary release via Emergency Release under the rear seat.

Safety

Critical: the car may stand in neutral with no parking brake. With ignition off, chock the wheels.
