Tesla Brakes — system fault
The red brake icon on a Tesla dashboard indicates a fault in the brake circuit. Continued driving is unsafe — Tesla, like any car, relies on hydraulic brakes for emergency stops (regen alone will not stop the car completely).
What this indicator means
The indicator combines several signals: critically low brake fluid, vacuum-booster pump failure (Tesla uses an electric pump, not engine-driven), circuit pressure sensor issue. Tesla avoided the classic vacuum booster — so the electric vacuum pump can fail independently.
Common causes
- Critically low brake fluid (leak)
- Electric vacuum-pump failure
- Pad wear below critical threshold (rarely, thanks to regen)
- Electronic parking brake (EPB) issue
- Brake control network fault after firmware update
What to do as a driver
Stop in a safe location. Check reservoir level (bonnet, front left). Below MIN = leak, call Tesla roadside. Do not use Autopilot with a red brake light — the system may not be able to react in time.
