Tesla ABS — anti-lock braking system

The red ABS icon on a Tesla means the anti-lock braking system is disabled. Unlike ICE cars, on a Tesla this also affects regen braking — the regen strength may be reduced.

What this indicator means

Tesla integrates ABS with the regen braking system. Wheel-speed sensors serve both ABS and torque control during regen. Losing one sensor signal disables both functions at once.

Common causes

  • Damaged wheel-speed sensor (usually front)
  • Broken wire in a wheel arch (from bad roads)
  • 12V AGM battery discharge (below 11.5 V)
  • Fault after firmware update
  • ABS hydraulic block issue

What to do as a driver

Check 12V battery voltage via Tesla Toolbox or a third-party adapter. Inspect wheel arches for wiring damage. Call Tesla Service — Rangers often resolve without a service-centre visit.

Safety

Important: brakes work, but without ABS. Avoid ice and hard braking.
