Oil pressure warning light on

Red oil can on the dash — one of the most dangerous dashboard warnings. What to do and OBD-II check.

Oil pressure light — STOP IMMEDIATELY. Not "drive to the shop" or "pull over in 2 miles." Turn off the engine as soon as safely possible. Driving with zero oil pressure destroys bearings and cam lobes in seconds.

Causes: (1) low oil level (leak or consumption) — most common; (2) faulty pressure sensor (false alarm — pressure is fine but sensor lies); (3) oil pump failure; (4) clogged oil filter from infrequent changes.

OBD-II: read P0520-P0524 (oil pressure sensor). If the live "Oil Pressure" PID (if supported) reads above zero — likely a bad sensor. If it reads zero and the light is on — pump or oil level issue. Check the dipstick FIRST.

First diagnostic steps

  1. STOP the engine IMMEDIATELY when the light appears
  2. Wait 5 min, check oil level on dipstick
  3. If level is OK — read OBD-II codes (P052x)
  4. Check voltage and resistance of the oil pressure sensor
  5. DO NOT restart the engine until the cause is known
