Vehicle history: what to check before you even go to view it
Half the bad cars can be filtered out without leaving home. What a VIN reveals and what the car itself adds.
The cheapest stage of inspecting a used car is the one done before travelling to see it. Half the bad options are filtered out by VIN, and that saves not money but weekends.
What a VIN gives you
The VIN is the unique body number, and it encodes the basics: year, plant, specification, engine type; the structure is covered in the VIN article.
The first thing to verify: the VIN in the documents equals the VIN on the body equals the VIN on the plate. A mismatch ends the conversation rather than starting a clarification.
Where to look on the body: usually under the windscreen, in the driver’s door aperture, under the bonnet, or beneath the floor covering. Exact locations vary by model.
Signs of tampering: restamping marks, wrong fonts, an uneven plate surface, fresh rivets.
What the databases show
The available sources vary by country, but the categories are the same:
Number of keepers — and how quickly they changed. Three owners in a year means the car was passed on for a reason.
Outstanding finance, leasing, or seizure. The most important legal item.
Stolen markers.
Accident history — where such a database exists.
Recorded mileage at inspections — the most accessible way to catch odometer fraud.
Taxi use — recorded in some countries; the consequences are covered in the ex-taxi article.
Recall campaigns — whether they were carried out.
What no database will show
Here the documentary part ends.
Actual mechanical condition.
Accidents never reported to an insurer — and that is most minor ones.
Repair quality after a recorded accident.
Mileage between records — the database sees points, not the intervals.
Engine and gearbox condition.
So database checks filter out, but do not confirm.
What on-site diagnostics adds
The part that cannot be fabricated or hidden in paperwork.
Mileage across several modules — an odometer can be rewritten, but mileage is not stored in one place; covered in the odometer fraud article.
Freeze frames of old codes — they may carry the mileage at the time of the fault. The strongest evidence available.
Readiness monitors — all reset means codes were cleared before the viewing; covered in the readiness monitors article.
Airbag codes — traces of deployment on an “accident-free” car.
Transmission adaptations — reset ones mean recent intervention.
Regeneration statistics on a diesel — a high count at low mileage is a contradiction.

- Get the VIN before travelling — a seller who will not give it has already answered the question.
- Check the available databases — finance and keepers first.
- Verify the VIN physically on site.
- Inspection and cold start.
- Diagnostics — codes, monitors, freeze frames.
- Compare what the car says against the seller and the databases.
