Renault Megane and Clio — Common OBD-II Codes: 1.2 TCe, 1.5 dCi, EDC

Renault Megane and Clio are among the most popular French vehicles in the UK and European market. Megane III/IV with 1.2 TCe, 1.5 dCi, and 2.0 dCi engines, and Clio IV/V with 0.9 TCe and 1.5 dCi, have characteristic faults that OBD-II diagnostics identifies well.
1.2 TCe / H4Bt (Megane III, Clio IV): Petrol Turbo
P0016 / P0017 — H4Bt Timing Chain Stretch
The H4Bt 1.2 TCe engine in Megane III and Clio IV (post-2012) is one of the most problematic modern Renault engines for timing chain issues.
Symptoms:
- Rattling/ticking on cold start (first 3+ minutes)
- P0016 or P0017 at 60,000–80,000 km mileage
- Harder cold starts in winter

Causes:
- Siemens/Continental HP pump (pre-2012 versions) — plunger wear after 150,000 km on poor-quality diesel
- Clogged fuel filter
- Common Rail leak through injector return valves
