OBD-II on motorcycles: BMW Motorrad, Harley, Yamaha — where the standard port lives and where it doesn't
What OBD-II can do on a bike: BMW Motorrad K1600 (16-pin OBD), Harley-Davidson (4-pin DDL), Yamaha K-Line, Ducati, KTM. Which adapters and specific codes are available.
Motorcycles with electronic fuel injection (from the 2000s) have a diagnostic bus — but not always the standard OBD-II connector (SAE J1962). Below: brief mapping of bike ↔ diagnostic path.
BMW Motorrad — standard OBD-II
Range: R1200/R1250 GS, K1600, S1000RR, F850GS, C400X — since 2018 mandatory 16-pin OBD-II (Euro 5).
What you can read:
- Standard OBD-II PIDs (RPM, throttle, coolant, MAF, O2)
- Engine DTCs (P-codes)
- Freeze Frame (see post)
- ABS codes (C-series)
Manufacturer-specific (Mode 22, BMW):
- TPS (throttle position sensor) state
- Cylinder balance (for R1250 boxer)
- Catalyst state
- ECU mileage (see odometer fraud post)
Adapter: standard ELM327 Bluetooth Classic SPP. Car Diagnostics works.
Harley-Davidson — 4-pin DDL
Connector: Data Link Connector (DLC) — 4-pin, under the seat. NOT 16-pin OBD-II.
What you can do:
- Read engine P-codes
- Historic codes (Mode 07 equivalent)
- Live params (RPM, EGT, VE, AFR)
Needs: dedicated 4-pin → OBD-II adapter ($30-60) plus a stock ELM327. Or dedicated Harley scanner (ScanMaster HD $200, Digital Tech DTS-1 $100).
Note: Harley uses a Bosch subset of OBD — not every standard PID works. E.g. no MAF (mass air flow isn’t used — only MAP).
Yamaha — K-Line (ISO 14230)
Range: R1, R6, MT-09, Tenere 700, XSR — use K-Line ISO 14230-4 (KWP2000).
Connector: proprietary 6-pin (Rally grid) or 3-pin (Supermoto) — depends on model.
Needs: K-Line ELM327 adapter (most clones support it) + OBD-II-to-3/6-pin cable (~$20).
What you can do:
- Engine DTCs
- Live params (RPM, TPS, coolant, gear position — where a gear sensor exists)
- VTA (Variable Throttle Actuator) state
- Regeneration status (for FZ-8 with DPF)
Ducati — DDS Mk II or DDA
Ducati — Diagnostic Data Acquisition (DDA) 4-pin connector, since 2015 most models use DDS Mk II — proprietary diagnostics via smartphone (Ducati Link app).
Via ELM327: limited — only basic P-codes, no live params. For full access — a Ducati DDS Mk II clone ($80-150).
So: if you have a Ducati after 2015 — buy the official Ducati Link cable ($60), OBD-II won’t give the full picture.
KTM — standard OBD-II (since 2020)
Range: 1290 Super Duke, 890 Adventure, 1290 Super Adventure — since 2020 standard 16-pin OBD-II (Euro 5).
What you can do: as BMW Motorrad — standard OBD-II + KTM-specific via Mode 22 (state of eco/street/rain/offroad map).
Adapter: standard ELM327.
Suzuki, Kawasaki — mostly K-Line
- Suzuki (GSX-R, V-Strom): 6-pin proprietary + K-Line (ISO 14230). Needs OBDLink MX+ or specific Suzuki SDS ($200+).
- Kawasaki (Ninja, Versys): 4-pin proprietary + K-Line. Stock ELM327 with adapter ($20).
Limitations
Motorcycle OBD-II diagnostics — not as rich as automotive:
- No ATF control (most bikes have no auto trans)
- Limited manufacturer PID library
- Often no ABS live-params (codes only)
- No TPMS (rare on bikes)
But DTC reads reliably — enough for 90% of service tasks (Check Engine register/clear, freeze frame reading).

Not supported natively:
- Ducati DDS Mk II (needs their tool)
- Vintage bikes (< 2000, no ECU)
