Immobilizer key learning: how to program a new key on 8 brands (Toyota, VW, BMW, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Nissan, Renault)
Lost your key, bought a new one — how to "program" it in the immobilizer. DIY vs shop, needs ELM327 or a special tool, prices $50-500.
Lost the second key? Bought a used car with one key? Broke the fob? You need to program a new key in the immobilizer. Below: procedure for 8 popular brands and why DIY isn’t always possible.
Three key types
1. Immobilizer chip (transponder) key
Simple RFID tag in the key head. Immobilizer (antenna around ignition) reads it on insert and matches against a database of allowed IDs.
2. Remote key fob (with buttons)
Immobilizer chip + RF transmitter for lock/unlock (315 or 433 MHz). Needs both parts programmed separately.
3. Smart key (proximity/keyless)
Immobilizer + BLE/UHF for keyless entry and start. Hardest — also needs antenna array programming in cabin.
Toyota / Lexus — auto learn (pair) or Techstream
Auto-learn (with master key, black head):
- Insert first (working) key, ON→OFF 5× within 10 sec
- After 60 sec security indicator flashes
- Insert second key ON → flash → OFF → first ON → OFF → done
Techstream (Toyota software, $400) — for learning when master is missing.
Cost: free if master exists, $150-350 at shop if not.
VW / Audi / Skoda / Seat — VCDS
- 1990-2000 (Immobilizer II): via VCDS ($240) — Module 17 → Login → Adaptation
- 2000+ (Immobilizer III / IV): needs component security secret code (SKC) — 5-7 digits from manufacturer database
- Get SKC: via dealer ($50-150) or service agent with database
Cost: $50-300 at specialist shop.
BMW — ISTA + INPA
- E-series keys (E90, E60): via INPA + Diagbox — programmable DIY with bare-key (custom-cut key + chip)
- F-series (F30, F10, F15): via ISTA D + BMW backend authorization — dealer or grey shop only
- G-series (G20, G30): very strict, dealer with online auth only
Cost: E-series $80-200; F-series $200-400; G-series $300-600.
Ford — auto-learn (2011+ models)
Auto-learn with two working keys:
- Both keys + new (bare) close by
- Key 1 → ON → OFF (hold 3 sec)
- Key 2 → ON → OFF (3 sec)
- New → ON → 3 sec until indicator → done
Only 1 key — need Ford IDS ($400) or FORScan (free for some models).
Cost: DIY $30-80 (blank key + program), shop $150-300.
GM (Chevy, Cadillac, GMC) — 10-min learn
10-minute auto-learn on 1996-2005 models (only if one working key exists):
- Ignition ON with working key → wait security lamp off
- Ignition OFF
- Insert new key, ON → wait 10 min
- OFF → ON → done
On newer (2005+): need Tech2 / MDI ($500+) or shop.
Hyundai / Kia — Smart Key Learning
- Immobilizer: KDS ($150) with mandatory PIN (from manufacturer database)
- Smart Key: same + additional position-antenna programming in cabin
Cost: $80-250.
Nissan / Infiniti — CONSULT III
- Basic immobilizer: 12-digit code needed (from CONSULT III or service archive)
- Smart Key: also RFID + BLE programming
Cost: $150-350.
Renault / Dacia — Card + PIN
- Card-only cars (2000-2015): card as key, program via CLIP-II
- Traditional key (post-2015 Duster, Sandero): regular transponder key, via CLIP
Cost: $80-200.
What doesn’t work via ELM327
ELM327 doesn’t program keys — need one of:
- Factory tool (VCDS, IDS, KDS, ISTA)
- Universal key tool (Autel MaxiIM IM508, IM608 — $600-2000)
- Specialized key services
What Car Diagnostics does
We:
- Read immobilizer state via Mode 22 (where available) — see immobilizer troubleshooting post
- Show procedure for your brand via Chat Agent — auto-learn or needs shop
- Don’t program keys — needs special hardware
Try on free tier — pair an ELM327 adapter. Immobilizer diagnostic — on every car. Live IMMO state via Mode 22 — on paid tier.
