Ignition coils: the symptoms people mistake for spark plugs
Coils and plugs produce similar symptoms but are tested differently. How swapping separates them, and why coils die in groups.
Coils and plugs produce nearly identical symptoms, cost very different amounts, and are tested in different ways. Which is why “we changed the plugs and it did not help” is the most common story in this subject.
The symptoms
Misfires under load — accelerating, uphill, overtaking. Idle may be perfectly fine.
Rough running when cold and in damp weather — condensation provokes breakdown; the regime is covered in the cold rough running article.
Shunting at steady throttle at speed.
A flashing Check Engine — those are active misfires destroying the catalyst.
Power loss with no obvious symptom — the module reduces output to protect the catalyst.
The swap method
The most reliable way to separate coil from plug, and it is free.
- Read the code — P0302, say, points at cylinder two.
- Swap the coils between cylinders two and three.
- Clear the code and drive a cycle.
- The code moved to cylinder three — the coil is at fault; it travelled with it.
- The code stayed on two — the coil is innocent: plug, injector, or compression.
The same method works with plugs. Two swaps settle the question with no instruments at all.
Why coils die in groups
A practical pattern worth knowing.
Coils of the same age work in identical conditions and degrade alike. When the first dies, the rest are close behind.
So: past six figures of mileage, replacing one coil often means another workshop visit within months. Replacing the set costs more once and less over a year.
The exception is a coil killed by an external cause: oil in the plug well, water, mechanical damage. There the cause is to blame, not age.
Why coils die early
Worn spark plugs. A widened gap demands higher voltage — the coil works at its limit and breaks down internally. This is the main cause, and it makes plugs the preventive maintenance for coils.
Oil in the plug well through a cam cover gasket — the classic cause of repeat failures on one cylinder.
Water after pressure-washing the engine.
Overheating — coils on an engine that regularly overheats live shorter lives.
What to watch in diagnostics
Per-cylinder codes — P0351…P0356 for coil circuits, P0301…P0306 for misfires.
Misfire counters — the key parameter: which cylinder and how often; mechanics in the misfire article.
Freeze frame conditions — the revs and load it happened at. Misfires under load with a clean idle is a coil’s typical signature.
Fuel trims — to eliminate the fuelling hypothesis.
