Fiat and Alfa Romeo are part of the Stellantis group. Their engines — FireFly, MultiAir, TwinAir, and the powerful Alfa Quadrifoglio — have both distinctive strengths and characteristic weaknesses that are well-diagnosable via OBD-II.
TwinAir 0.9 (Fiat 500, Panda, Punto): Micro-Engine with Nuances
TwinAir is a 2-cylinder turbocharged 0.9L engine. Characterful but specific.
P0016 — CKP/CMP Synchronisation Failure
TwinAir has a chain-driven valve train with the MultiAir hydraulic valve control system. On 2011–2015 engines, rapid timing chain wear is known after 50,000–60,000 miles.
Symptoms:
NOTE: Some TwinAir production batches were subject to dealer recall for timing chain.
P0299 — Underboost
The TwinAir turbo is small. P0299 causes:
- Exhaust manifold gasket leak — common at 40,000–50,000 miles
- Wastegate not closing (corrosion)

P0011 / P0014 — VVT Out of Range
On MultiAir, the intake VVT phaser is sensitive to oil quality.

P0300 — Multi-Cylinder Misfires (Carbon)
MultiAir 1.4T with GDI → intake valve carbon deposits at 40,000–60,000 miles. Symptom: rough cold idle, poor throttle response from cold.
JTDM 1.9/2.0 (Alfa Romeo 147, 156, Giulia, Stelvio): Diesel
Alfa Romeo uses Fiat diesel units (JTDM with Bosch Common Rail).
P0087 — Rail Pressure Below Threshold
Most common “expensive” code on JTDM after 90,000 miles.
Causes:
- Worn metering valve (MPROP) on HPFP
- Clogged fuel fine filter

On top-spec QV (510 hp) — complex system:
- Twin-turbocharged with independent control
- Rear-biased torque vectoring
QV typical codes:
- P0299 / P0234 — one turbine not producing pressure (asymmetry between turbines)

Fiat/Alfa EOBD Protocol
Fiat Group uses a proprietary extended protocol over OBD-II (similar to FIAT KWP2000).
Standard ELM327 reads only Mode 01/03 (basic PIDs and codes). For extended Alfa/Fiat codes (6-digit hex), an adapter supporting ISO 14230 KWP2000 or UDS Mode 22 is needed.
