Engine oil pressure via OBD-II: codes P0521, P0524, why it's "shut down now" and how to diagnose
What OBD-II shows when oil pressure drops: P0520-P0524, difference between "high" and "low", when you can't drive another meter, worn pump, clogged filter or worn bearings.
Red oil-pressure light is the most critical OBD signal. Not “make it to the shop” — but stop within 100 meters, shut off, call a tow. Because an engine without oil pressure destroys itself in 10-30 seconds. Below: which codes signal the problem and how OBD-II reveals nuances.
What oil pressure is (for a new reader)
The oil pump generates pressure (driven by the crankshaft) delivering oil to bearings (crank, cam), hydraulic tensioners (timing), lifters, piston-cooling jets. Normal pressure:
- At idle (900 RPM): 22-36 psi
- At 3000 RPM: 58-87 psi
- At 5000 RPM: 73-100 psi
Minimum for bearings — 7 psi at idle. Below — “dry” contact, bearing destruction in minutes.
OBD-II oil pressure codes

Besides OBD, most cars have a separate hydraulic switch (old-school) that drives the red oil-pressure light directly (not via ECU).
What to do on P0524 or red light
Step 1 (within 30 sec): smoothly reduce RPM, pull over, shut off.
Step 2: open the hood, wait 5 min, then check oil level with the dipstick:
- Below min → top up any oil of roughly the right viscosity (SAE 5W-40, 10W-40). Start, listen, check OBD:
- Light off, pressure normal → simply low level (loss or leak)
- Light on → continue
- In range (between min and max) → don’t start, tow
Causes of real pressure loss
1. Too low oil level
- Leak (seals, valve-cover gasket, oil filter)
- Oil burning (worn piston rings, oil combusts in cylinders)
- Blown head gasket (oil goes into coolant)
Prevention: check oil level every 600 mi.
2. Clogged oil filter or pickup screen
- Cheap oil forms sludge, clogs pump pickup screen
- Old oil (over 10k mi without change) → clogs filter
Fix: oil + filter change ($50-150). Flushing doesn’t always help.
3. Worn oil pump
- Mileage > 125k mi, pump seals worn, pressure drops
- Often audible as “whining” under load
Fix: pump replacement ($200-600 part + $200-400 labour).
4. Worn crankshaft bearings (worst case)
- Bearing play → oil leaks back and forth, pressure won’t hold
- Symptoms: metallic knock on cold start, worsens as it warms
Fix: engine rebuild ($2000-8000).
5. Sensor lies
- Best case. Sensor is dead, real pressure is fine.
- Verified with a mechanical gauge (~$30 rental at a shop)
Fix: sensor replacement ($20-80).
What OBD-II can hint

- Real oil pressure (bar or psi) — to compare with the pressure switch
- Oil temperature — high (>230°F) reduces viscosity, pressure drops
- RPM vs oil pressure ratio — norm: pressure grows linearly with RPM

Prevention
- Change oil on schedule (don’t stretch 12k mi instead of 6k)
- OEM oil (or manufacturer certification: BMW LL-01, VW 504/507, MB 229.5)
- Check level monthly (visually, dipstick)
- Listen to the engine on cold start — metallic knock = signal
- Don’t “top up with what’s there” — mixing incompatible oils is forbidden
