Car covers and outdoor parking: when they protect and when they harm

A car cover looks like the obvious answer to outdoor parking. In fact it helps in some conditions and harms in others, and the difference is not obvious until the first scratched car.

When a cover harms

Dust and wind. There is always dust between cover and paint. Wind moves the fabric — and the dust works as sandpaper. The result is a web of fine scratches across the bodywork, visible in sunlight.

Moisture underneath. An unventilated cover traps condensation. Wet bodywork under fabric dries slower than in the open — which accelerates corrosion where it already starts; covered in the underbody rust article.

A wet cover in frost freezes to the paint, and removing it takes lacquer with it.

Covering a dirty car guarantees that web of scratches.

When a cover is justified

Parking under trees — protection from sap, droppings, and leaves. Sap and droppings damage lacquer quickly, and here a cover wins outright.

Hail protection — purpose-made padded covers.

In a sheltered, windless place — where the fabric does not move.

How to choose one

Breathable material — essential. Polythene sheeting creates a greenhouse and does more harm than no cover at all.

A soft inner lining — that is what settles the scratching question.

Wind fixings — under-body elastics and straps; a cover flapping in the wind does the most damage.

Correct size — a loose cover moves more.

Rules of use

1. Only cover a clean car.
2. And only a dry one — moisture underneath is more dangerous than rain.
3. Remove it after rain to dry, if the car stands for long.
4. Do not cover hot bodywork straight after a drive.
5. Do not use it in strong wind unless it is securely fixed.

Alternatives for outdoor parking

Paint protection — it works around the clock, does not move, and does not rub. For a daily car it is more practical than a cover.
